I have been in this business long enough to know that very few spend their disposable income on Kids Room  Shopping, so why talk about Night Lights? It is no fun for a little person to open a package with a beautiful sham, a fancy pillow,  or a peg rack for the wall.  Unless you have permission to use that peg rack for heavy artillery, which my ten year old did once, it’s just not fun.  Rather than write on the features and products sold here on my website pages I want to temp you with only one product.  Night Lights.  Every year I order Night Lights by the dozens.  Even before I had all the Night Lights priced and put away in my showroom in Portland, they were selling right out of the box.  Why?  Why Night Lights?  Why not a cute stuffed toy, or darling key-chain, or a sock monkey?

There is a shopper out there that is practical and price savvy.  Parent, Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents and Gunkals who want something to give that will outlive the next trend.   Night Lights are a darling way to accent a room.  They are very practical, and a price point that is under $20.00 allowing one stop shopping for all the kids in your life.  I was excited over the rocket night light. My ten year old saw that and he asked for it for Christmas.  Always brightens my buying heart when my own kids want the products I invest in.  I am a seasoned buyer and know just the designs and styles that will work in most kid’s rooms.  If this sounds like a sales pitch, guess what it is.  I would love to light up the night for that special little person in your life.  If you are not able to make into the home of that little person I can even wrap as a gift and ship to the front door, ready to be placed under a tree.  Night Lights, indeed for Kids’ Room Shopping.  Here is the link to the page, if you’d like to consider purchasing. http://hungouttobuy.com/room-decor/lamps/night-lights/

I Am A Beautiful Extrovert

Did you know that by nature (whatever that means) I am an extrovert?  I am not really sure if I came by this naturally or if life circumstances, as a young  girl birthed that confidence to step out and connect with people.  There once was a young girl who was told that she was ugly and stupid (or in more direct terms “dumb fuck” & “stupid ass” & “ugly brat” spoken by a step-father).  I learned early that blue eyes, dimples, charm and wit could carry me to new levels of confidence outside of such harsh words. I excelled in school with the purpose of proving I was not dumb.  I could use my words to express fun, funny, and split second timing with wit and wisdom.  Deep down inside those hurtful words attached to my long-term memory.  The only thing is this,  know one could ever tell.  Really, how can you be ugly with a cute handbag and shoes?  Using my charm and wit to be that cute person everyone spoke into me since childhood.  Thus you have that grown up extrovert who stands tall in a room because not only do I know how to wear those stiletto’s I know how to walk in them too.  Then one moment that all changes.  Exposed.  Insecurities that took me back.

I met Stephen Dimmick through twitter.  Checked out his websiteand began to feel that this man, make up expert to celebrities, understood the deeper parts of a women’s heart and the feelings behind true beauty.   His work featured in the highest level of fashion magazines. I watched him. Truth be known I stalked him.  Watching his video’s on the application of applying make up, and understanding more how he poured his gifts and experience into the heart of beauty.

Stephen Wiping The Tears

As our friendship grew, I trusted him with some of the deepest parts of my heart.  I stepped into his business of “Bold You Beautiful You”.  You see I had the bold down.  I have never once in my life thought I was beautiful.  That little girl was still very ugly.  Kids believe what they hear, and as much success and confidence I have in both my personal life and business life I was still very much that ugly girl who learned just how to be cute.  Can a girl just grow up and be beautiful.  At the age of 46 I grew up.  September 9th I grew into that beautiful women.

Here is my story:

That wonderful man Stephen Dimmick, took what he knows through years of touching the most beautiful faces and taught me how to believe that you don’t have to have an airbrushed face to be beautiful.  Listen to the words from his heart and experience:

Kids Room Accents & Contact Paper

You don’t have to spend very much to get amazing Kids Room Accents using just Contact Paper.  I find that when I find cute contact paper I have to buy it.  Not sure where I might use it but nice to keep on my shelves I also sell contact paper in my store.   Then one day a client  wants to have her child’s toy-box embellished with color. She wanted it to be embellished in a way that could transition from one child to the next, so no painting or permanent design accents.  Thar’s when it hit me.  Why not use contact paper.  I found a cute print that matched the color and design of her daughter’s room and cut out a triangle pennant to shape along  the top and sides of the box.  What a surprise to my client on both her toy-box and her budget.

If you have a cute frame, and not yet ready to put a picture in it, you can add a little contact paper to add design and color.

You can also use the contact paper to pop more of the colors you are using in your child’s room in many different ways.  Here I have covered a cork boars, and then added contact paper to the aqua blue frame.

You can cut out shapes of animals, flowers, geometric shapes and stick on to a chair, a wall, or even a mirror.  So  easy and cost-effective to add Kids Room Design with just contact paper.  What might you consider covering?

The Laughing & Crying Kids Room Designer

A collision of laughing and crying in one day by me, the kids room designer.  Typically I take a few clients at a time.  Recently I have been working long hours setting up a showroom. Basically designing 12 rooms within four weeks. Getting products ordered, in, and displayed.  Typically with those few clients it can take up to 12 weeks to complete the one kid’s room, which is quite normal.  My normal is not 12 room designs in four weeks.  Then add the halting of an office make-over at home in progress to scratching that and starting over.  Moving my office out of my home and downtown Portland.  There is bound to  be a collision, and many mistakes along the way.

Yesterday was that day. Paint finally dried, now the hanging of a funky mirror above a painted chest. Orange fun. Yummy summer orange as in bright and cheery.  I was to hang the mirror, pat myself on the back, and then run off to meet two friends for a fabulous afternoon on the waterfront. I even had on my favorite summer skirt.  With the mirror hung, and dangling on one screw, I step back for a split second to see that it was positioned correctly.  Just a quick second, not even a half second and it crashed.  It landed and broke into what seemed like thousands of pieces. Only to realize that the glass top on the chest also had been shattered.  The fright of this must have expanded my belly, because my favorite skirt’s zipper exploded too.  Designer Fail!!!!

Whew skirt fixed!
Portland, OR waterfront

I quickly ran across the street to a dress shop.  I started crying over the emotions of the past 3 minutes. Then I started laughing.  The owner of the shop quickly jumped into the details of fixing my skirt and found a cute scarf to wrap around the skirt if the zipper failed me.  I ended up hanging the frame with no mirror and ran off to a wonderful afternoon with friends.

Life can be challenging and hard.  Sometimes, the precise plans we have end in broken glass, and a split zipper.  Then there is a choice that must be made.  For some it’s simple, for others a bit more of a challenge.  The choice is to find joy in the moment, or to hold onto the frustrations.  I let it go.  I chose to skip off into the afternoon.  Enjoying the day in the sunshine and laughing with friends.  Embracing the laughing and the crying of a kids room designer.

And for the time this did not look so bad.  It has since been replaced by a painting and frame is being repaired with a new mirror.  What are you laughing and crying moments?  How do you choose to work through them?

I know it’s kind of cheesy when you see your name in print and start dancing and singing.  Especially if you are eating a cheese sandwich or spraying cheese on a Ritz cracker. No matter how you slice it. I did just that.  Wow!!!  Thank you 30secondmom.com for featuring me on your blog this week. I am truly grateful.  As a contributing writer I promise to always bring your readers my best in kid’s room design.  I also promise to limit the cheesy factor to my own blog pages.  This is a straight cut and paste, no cheesier way to post this.

30Second Kids Room Design Tips with @ElizOnTheGo!

The wonderful Elizabeth Traub is a 30Second Mom contributor who is a kids’ room designer with a website and a Portland-based showroom that are filled with bright ideas for kids’ rooms. Her simple, functional and stylish suggestions make it easy for any mom to turn a basic room into a space her child won’t want to leave. Check out some of the thoughts Elizabeth shared with us at 30Second Mom!

Q) How did you end up getting involved with interior design, particularly for kids’ rooms?

Elizabeth Traub

A) At 14, my parents let me decorate my own room. I like decorating kids’ rooms because they yield lots of fun and color! I then sewed my linens for my college dorm room. My influencers noticed I had a gift, which led to a future in design.

Q) When deciding on a design for a child’s space, it’s hard to know where to start! What do you turn to for inspiration?

A) When designing kids’ spaces, I ask my clients questions about their kids, including their personalities and their two favorite colors in the world. This provides plenty of inspiration!

Q) What are some easy ways to add design elements to your kids’ rooms without breaking the bank?

A) Accent pillows, wall shelves, picture frames – these all spruce up kids’ rooms. You can buy new or do it yourself (DIY).

Q) What are common frustrations when designing kids’ rooms and how do you overcome them?

“Simply Sabrina” from http://www.HungOuttoBuy.com

A) It’s very common for parents to have purchased the wrong size of furniturethat limit space and function. It’s frustrating to have to start over or relocate a kid’s room into another room, yet it happens a lot.Q) What tips do you have for how can we make our kids’ rooms a fun yet functional space?

A) Allow room for your kids to be creative. Desk/play-tables and bookcases offer so much function and creativity. I also like allowing a wall just for framing your kid’s art for inexpensive and meaningful design.

Q) What are your absolute must-have furniture pieces for every child’s room?

A) A twin bed – sizing up takes up much-needed space for later. Also, a chest of drawers can double as a nightstand if space is limited.

Thank you for these great tips! For more from Elizabeth, follow her on Twitter and read her blog!

Porltand Kid’s Room

You have heard of the “news room”, the “class room”, the “green room”, the “powder room”, the “tact room”,  and now we are introducing the “Portland Kid’s Room”.

Each month we are going to feature a local kids’ room here in Portland, OR.  A room that we thought would light of the streets of Portland, give great ideas and insights that go beyond our own design skills.  Just today a lovely pregnant mama and her husband came into the our showroom. She shared what she was doing in her nursery. Sharing how she is bringing all kinds of color, and design elements. As she shared, her face lit up.   I asked if she would like to be  our first feature for “Portland Kid’s Room”, and guess what she said YES!

What exactly will the Hung Out To Buy team, Elizabeth & Elliot, be doing?  Grabbing one of our favorite photographers, grabbing a video camera and step into reality at it’s finest.  We are going to step into a Portland Kid’s Room, take pictures, talk to the parents, and meet the kids who live in these rooms.  Who needs to hire an actress, wait our first Portland Kid’s Room feature is an actress here in Portland.  We will tell you more about her later.

If you live in and around the Portland, OR area and think you have a room worthy to be featured in our “Portland Kid’s Room” monthly segment we want to hear from you.  Contact us and let us know who you are and tell us about your room. You never know, you just may find yourself, your kid’s room, and your amazing decorating featured here on our website and linked to our youtube channel.

“Boutique Culture In The Alphabet Historical District” by Elliot Otteson

“Boutique Culture In The Alphabet Historical District”

From fusion chefs, to specialty galleries and alternative fashion boutiques, Portlanders require their fine home decor the way they experience their specialty coffees. Enjoying notes of eclectic new concepts paired with the heritage legacy, communities here don’t see need to impress as much as they value coming through one’s own stroke of personal creativity and comfort.

Furthermore, through unconventional artists, music, and emerging design, more Portlanders are discovering the treasure of personal innovation through nonpareil decor as veritable as the materials composed.  Respectively, located in the Alphabet Historic District of NW Portland’s specialty boutique community, we at Hung Out To Buy are serving to compliment our family of friends with a complimentary philosophy of native couture from household to household.

Serving up Kids Room Design through the front doors of a renovated warehouse, with fashion flair and fun.  Portlanders  will experience  that intimate experience of one on one, face to face, hand shake to baby hand offs. ( Elizabeth loves to hold the babies while a mama rests her arms and wanders.)  You can sip  your coffee down the street, walk in to Hung Out To Buy, and then head out for an early lunch all within walking distance.   It’s a Boutique Culture in NW Portland and we invite you to come in and visit as you pass through the streets of the Alphabet Historical District.

Trending in Kids Room Design

This past week I have spent a great deal of time in my warehouse Trending In Kids Room Design.  Covered in hues of oranges, aqua’s pinks, whites and some blue and green are still waiting to be opened.  Painting a lot of accent furniture pieces.  I was asked, “how do you know what colors to be painting?  What is Trending in Kids Room Design?”  I have  a secret.  Okay, lean in a little closer. Look to your left, and then your right. Make sure no one is reading over shoulder.  I know what’s trending in kids room design.  I have known for over 20 years.  Now I am going to share this secret with you. Here it is.  Whatever you love and what raises your excitement level is what is trending in kids room design.

I found this old wooden desk. Layers of paint from years of the past. I had to sand it down to beautiful raw wood, and then I painted it a beautiful crisp white.  And then a new trend hit me.  New?  Is anything really new?  Or is it an old idea being reinvented into something more interesting for today’s culture.  I have never ever followed a trend.  I do not pour through magazines and follow suit.  Nor should you.  It takes some boldness, confidence and a love for a color to step out into your own trend and guess what?  There lies the secret to what’s trending in kids room design. A darling Aqua Striped desk.  I had so much fun painting this. Color is what is trending in the back of my warehouse.  This piece made it onto the showroom floor and I love it.  It’s what trending in kids room design.

Do you love this?  What is trending in your kids room design?
